High school multi-sport athlete, Joshua H, experienced hip pain for two years. Not knowing the extent of the injury, he always managed to push through the pain with help from physical therapy and chiropractic treatments. As symptoms grew worse during basketball season, Joshua and his family decided to seek orthopedic care from Iowa Ortho Sports Medicine Provider, Dr. Steven Aviles, after a referral from his local provider.
Joshua’s MRI revealed a torn labrum and protruding hip bone. Dr. Aviles ordered a hip arthroscopy which would involve repairing the hip labrum, the joint capsule, and shaving off part of his hip bone. A hip arthroscopy is a common surgical procedure where small poke holes are created, instruments are inserted, and all necessary improvements to hip anatomy are executed.
“Dr. Aviles explained the surgery and recovery in great detail, even providing pictures of the procedure he did on Joshua. It was so calming in the way he sat down with us before and after surgery taking his time to answer our questions. He was never rushed and we never felt like we were holding him back from being someplace else. His knowledge and experience was evident in the way he answered our questions and explained what to expect. He instantly took away many of our fears and worries in a professional manner,” states Joshua’s mother.
Joshua has had successful athletic seasons this school year and continues to get stronger each day.
