I have always enjoyed being active. I rode RAGBRAI for several years and it has always been a blessing being active with my kids and grandkids. However, my knees gradually started becoming more painful as the years went on. I kept thinking my knees would get better if I exercised more. I tried walking, going to the pool and riding my bike – but the pain did not go away.
My husband and I had the opportunity to travel to Paris a couple of years ago. I kept up with everyone on our excursions but with difficulty and I was always at the back of the line. It was then that I decided to make an appointment. This was in September 2017.
At my first visit at Iowa Ortho, I immediately had confidence in Dr. Craig Mahoney. I knew it was inevitable that I would need to have knee replacements but I opted for knee injections for the next three years. Casey Howe, PA-C would perform my knee injections. They were absolutely painless and Casey was wonderful in explaining everything that I needed to hear. The injections helped immensely, but eventually as time passed I knew it was time. Casey would tell me, “You will know when you are ready.” He was right!
I had my left knee replacement February 23, 2021 by Dr. Mahoney. Everything went so well that I decided to have my right knee replaced later that year on August 10, 2021. Post-op appointments and recovery for both knee replacements have gone perfectly. I did my physical therapy in my home town and my therapists would remark each visit on how wonderful my knee was doing. I believe my progress with physical therapy was so successful because of the excellence of Dr. Mahoney.
I am really looking forward to being more active with my grandkids again and to be able to just walk and not experience any pain. Hopefully we will travel again and instead of trailing behind the group I will be leading.
I drive just over two hours to the Iowa Ortho office in Pleasant Hill. The reason I make the drive is because of Dr. Mahoney, Casey Howe, PA-C and all of the office staff. They are all absolutely wonderful!
