Shoulder Replacement
Shoulder replacement, also known as shoulder arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure that involves replacing the damaged parts of the shoulder joint with artificial components. The goal is to relieve pain and improve function when conservative treatments are no longer effective.
There are several types of shoulder replacement procedures:
- Total Shoulder Replacement: Replaces both the ball (humeral head) and socket (glenoid) with prosthetic components.
- Reverse Shoulder Replacement: Reverses the joint structure to improve function when the rotator cuff is severely damaged.
- Partial Shoulder Replacement (Hemiarthroplasty): Only the ball of the joint is replaced.
When Is Shoulder Replacement Needed?
Shoulder replacement may be recommended if you have:
- Severe osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis
- Rotator cuff tear arthropathy
- Avascular necrosis
- Post-traumatic arthritis or fracture
- Chronic pain and stiffness limiting daily life
- Failed non-surgical treatments such as physical therapy, medications, or injections
What to Expect from Surgery
- A sling for support in the initial weeks
- Physical therapy to regain strength and range of motion
- Gradual return to activities over the course of several months
Most patients report significant pain relief and improved mobility after surgery.
