Knee Pain Relief
If osteoarthritis is limiting your active lifestyle, Iowa Ortho has answers. We understand that surgery may not be desired by all, and can sometimes be delayed in appropriate cases. This is why Iowa Ortho offers several non-surgical, early intervention treatment options for pain from arthritis. Iowa Ortho physicians are prepared to learn more about you and your needs to determine which treatment option is right for you. One option may be Viscosupplementation.
Viscosupplementation, also known as a knee shot, is a treatment for osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. It is a low-volume, single-injection treatment designed to help you get moving again. The shot acts as a lubricant and shock absorber in the joint. Iowa Ortho physicians utilize Zimmer Biomet’s Gel-One brand of viscosupplementation.
In clinical studies, Gel-One has shown to reduce OA knee pain for up to 26 weeks. In addition, patients receiving multiple treatment cycles of Gel-One showed no increased risk of side effects. Every patient responds differently to the treatment, but medical studies have shown that some patients experienced a reduction in pain in as little as three weeks after the injection of Gel-One.
Gel-One is indicated for patients who do not respond adequately to other available treatments for knee osteoarthritis such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), from simple pain medications, such as acetaminophen, or from exercise and physical therapy.
We have options for you no matter where you are at in your care journey. Injections may be a great first line of defense against knee pain. Contact us today to learn more and see if you are eligible.
