Iowa Ortho’s West Des Moines clinic offers comprehensive orthopedic care in a convenient suburban setting. The clinic is directly east of Culver’s on Office Plaza Drive, south of I-80. Our office is in the same building as Ballenger Chiropractic and Acupuncture.

I recently had hip replacement surgery at Iowa Ortho at their new surgery center in Grimes. Dr. Beecher was the surgeon. The facility is huge and very well organized. I probably interacted with at least 10 people or so during my five hour stay at the surgery center for the hip replacement. To a person, they were cheerful, professional, knowledgeable, and understanding. It seemed as if every one of them enjoyed coming to work at Iowa Ortho. Dr. Beecher was attentive, knowledgeable, and once again understood that having a hip replacement is not something a patient does very often. I was struck by the fact that every time I interacted with an Iowa Ortho employee, they concluded the conversation with this: Do you have any questions? It was apparent to me that Iowa Ortho has worked very hard In creating a culture of being patient focused.

I saw Dr. Schmitz for a second opinion after another well-regarded surgeon recommended spinal fusion for lumbar spondylolisthesis. Dr. Schmitz recommended a different variation of spinal fusion than the first surgeon. After completing follow up visits with both surgeon’s, I felt most comfortable with Dr. Schmitz. He was very thorough in his assessment and spent a lot of time in multiple appointments answering my many questions. I felt well informed regarding my options and possible outcomes. I am now 4 months post-surgery and I have been very satisfied with the results, and appreciative of the care provided by Dr. Schmitz and his team. I would recommend him to others considering spine surgery.

She listens. As someone who deals with chronic pain due to a childhood accident it’s so important to feel like the Dr is interested in finding a solution with you and not just shove you out the door. We’re back to the drawing board with our bag of options however she’s still dedicated to helping me find what works. I trust her and I give all of her suggestions a good faith effort. Even if some muscle relaxers don’t work or a different nerve block made me gain weight I’m okay with it. Because she didn’t give up hearing it, she gave me her next ideas of options while physically crossing this off my list. I’ve been to a few new drs at Iowa ortho but Jenna makes me feel heard, cared about and supported for the next idea.

Walked in sat for a second ln the lobby ,was called , got put into a Dr/patient room waited 2 minutes , seen Dr.did the nerve test asked a few questions and was on my way home less that 30 minutes from when I arrived.. My visit (Nov. 2024) with Dr. Matthes at Iowa Ortho (Jordan Creek) was pleasant and productive. Wait time was less than five minutes. The necessary imaging of my knee was done on-site, and in just a few minutes he was able to provide a complete diagnosis and show me on the xray why I was experiencing knee pain. Several treatment options were discussed, and the one I chose was performed quickly in-office and I am now thankfully pain free.

I went to see Dr. Schmitz for Spondylolisthesis that has been affecting me for years and first thing they did was take X-Rays. Once they were done Dr. Schmitz came in and went over in detail my X-Rays with me. He did not hesitate to move forward with explaining and preparing the fusion surgery process. I was given a booklet explaining the surgery process and they will be reaching back out soon to start scheduling everything that needs to be done beforehand. Every other doctor I’ve seen has wanted to only stick a bandaid on the issue or not do surgery at all.

I have lower back pain that has been moving into my hips and legs. I have not been able to sleep more than a few hours a night. I set up an appointment with a doctor, but it was two weeks out. A friend suggested calling Iowa Ortho to see Dr. Rosenthal. I called and had an appointment within 2 days. I saw Travis A. Williams, PA-C, who works closely with Dr. Rosenthal. He was very attentive, and listened to all my symptoms. He prescribed a muscle relaxer and physical therapy. I have now been able to sleep the last 2 nights. We are scheduling an MRI to see the prognosis. After that, we will plan out a treatment plan. I was very impressed by Travis and the Iowa Ortho staff. I was able to get an appointment quickly and some relief within a few days. I would highly recomment Iowa Ortho.

I have been a fan of Dr. Paulson ever since my first trigger finger episode a few years back. After recommending an injection, he quickly assessed some hesitancy on my part, to which I admitted being a confirmed chicken. Dr. Paulson is not only an expert in his field, but is compassionate. Without any judgment, he kindly alleviated my worries, explaining the procedure and how a numbing agent would be applied before the injection. Consenting to the treatment but nevertheless mentioning I wouldn’t look, he smiled and said no problem, he wouldn’t either. That certainly took the edge off. Feeling much better about the process, I squinted me eyes shut. The numbing agent was applied and I internally grimaced getting ready for the worst. Dr. Paulson chuckled and said he was already done. I am glad to say that my initial trigger finger has not returned, but I returned after a couple of years for a different trigger finger (which also went well) and recently consulted about another hand disorder that has slowly developed over time. Dr. Paulson has the special ability to put patients at ease, whether for an actual treatment or a consultation of how to proceed with a disorder. He makes time to ensure all questions and concerns have been addressed.

Electing to have multi-level spinal fusion is a scary proposition, but after reviewing X-rays and an MRI I knew my back wasn’t going to heal itself. PT and an epidural provided minimal benefit, and at age 66 I was ready for a long term solution. I met with Dr. Schmitz twice to learn as much as possible about the proposed surgery. He was very thorough and professional, and I gained the confidence needed to schedule the surgery. I am SO glad I did! At eight weeks post- op I have a much better quality of life. I am back to water aerobics and stationary bike exercise and have the stamina to walk a mile or more. I’m so grateful to Dr. Schmitz and his team!

I had an initial app’t with Travis for a severe very painful back problem I have had for several years. In addition to the tests I brought with me, he got further x-rays. He went over x-rays, went over history, symptoms, did pertinent exam and answered all my questions. Formulated a complete plan to start attacking my problems and instructed me about the time line I could expect things to take place and when a follow-up appointment would take place. My experience at Iowa Ortho was excellent. I could not have asked for better treatment. Every encounter was perfect. I got an appointment in less than 24 hours. I requested online and was called back within an hour. I was told what the clinic needed from my family doctor and how and when to request it. I was able to fill out and submit forms and vital information online. I was told what to expect when I came to the office. At the office I was greeted promptly, filled out a couple more forms and was seen shortly thereafter. The nurse reviewed items and Dr. Shumway appeared within minutes. He asked questions about my condition, explained the options, the nature of my condition and proceeded with the treatment. He told me exactly what to expect, treated me, told me how and when to expect improvement, and when to come back. Dr. Shumway is a great, caring physician. His staff matches. On my second visit eight months later, I wanted to be certain that I was proceeding in ways that would continue to protect my hands. Dr. Shumway answered each of my questions directly and thoroughly. He presented his judgment, gave me clear options, and allowed me to participate in the course of my treatment. The staff is excellent. Everyone is on time. I could not be happier with my experience with Dr. Shumway and staff.

The minute Dr KLEIN walked in the room he made me feel comfortable and smiling. Excellent bed side manner. I really appreciated the time and attention Eric Hedrick gave me when I had a consultation recently. I had a lot of questions and he answered all of them honestly. He didn’t push me to have surgery right away and gave me all the pros and cons of having shoulder surgery. He was willing to have a thorough conversation with Dr Vinyard when he returns and they will contact me with a recommended course of action. Also, my visit to the office in West Des Moines was processed very quickly and safely given the pandemic situation we find ourselves in. So there wasn’t much waiting to be seen and that’s nice – at anytime!

I am an Iowa Ortho girl. After 10 surgeries my neck fusion was my most recent. Dr Kraig and Dr Harbach were great. Being very conservative in how soon fusion was the final step. Since that day in January 2020 they have been there to make sure everything was healing properly and that I was able to get help if needed. I highly recommend this team of surgeons!!

After 2 years of being told I just needed to lose weight (I do) but could never say how much or if it would help the back pain. I was told that I had pinched nerve but every surgeon I previously saw said my nerves were fine. I was defeated and figured that I would just have to live with the pain and inability to walk. But after meeting Dr.Schmitz and his PA-C Robey Orewiler that went out the window. They confirmed that there was an issue with the nerve and the discs. And best of all they could help fix it. They were honest and up front about risks and what the surgery and after care required. And even though being heavy does make it a bit harder, they said it was not a deal breaker. I felt so relieved and grateful I almost cried! Finally found the right people who would listen to the patient and actually work to help them! Definitely recommend.

Dr. Todd Harbach and PA Kraig Holtorf and their equally-dedicated staff are almost miracle workers. Their skill in surgery changed my life and eliminated the daily pain which punished me.
